A day after Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Reddy attended an NDA rally in Ludhiana,an angry and embarrassed TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu tried to keep the mahakutami (Grand Alliance) from falling apart even as Reddy maintained he was still with the Grand Alliance in the state but would support the NDA at the Centre.
After a meeting at NTR Bhavan on Monday morning,Chandrababu Naidu said the party would wait and watch till the counting on May 16 before taking any decision on the TRS. Asserting that there was no question of joining or supporting the NDA,Naidu reached out to leaders of the remaining alliance partners,CPI and CPI(M),and told them that the alliance would stand even without the TRS.
TDP sources said Naidu wanted to announce expulsion of TRS from the alliance but the party decided to wait till the election results were announced. The party and other alliance members,CPI and CPI(M),are peeved that Reddy armtwisted Naidu into giving the TRS more seats to contest before joining the pre-poll alliance, and has now switched loyalty. The party does not want to react at this moment. We will wait for the results to be announced and then take a decision. If Reddy, who hardly had four MPs,wants to dig his own grave,it is fine with us, a top leader said.
After rubbing shoulders with leaders of the BJP and its allies in Ludhiana on Sunday,Reddy still kept playing the cat-and-mouse game with Naidu on Monday by stating that the TRS was still with the grand alliance in the state but would support the NDA at the Centre. He apparently told Naidu that all parties championing the cause of separate Telangana would obviously support the NDA because only the BJP had made it clear that it would create a separate Telangana within 100 days of coming to power.
TRS spokesperson G Jagdishwar Reddy on Monday stated that the TRS was only helping the NDA in defeating the Congress in the north while it was very much a part of the TDP-led grand alliance in the state. The TRS statement came in the face of pressure from the TDP with Naidu seeking a clarification from Reddy.
The TRS has not joined the NDA as such. We are only supporting the BJP and its allies to defeat the Congress in north India. In the state we are very much with the grand alliance, said the spokesman.
However,TRS’ most vocal MLA Harish Rao said the party had joined the NDA.
