At a roundtable on reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV at the European Union office on Tuesday, member,Planning Commission,Syeda Hameed was visibly upset about the absence of anybody either from the National Aids Control Organisation or the Health Ministry. It was only at the fag-end of the meeting that NACO director general Lov Verma walked in. Hameed barely had time to present a report on the best practices to him before leaving.

Image Makeover

WHILE busy investigating corruption cases, the CBI is also working on an image makeover as it completes 50 years. The agency plans to capture its history through a documentary that will showcase famous cases it has probed like Bofors,Aarushi and the Satyam scam. Expected to be out in October this year, the documentary, being shot in Delhi, will be screened at a national anti-corruption meet towards the year-end. The investigative agency also plans to issue a CBI stamp in collaboration with the postal department.

Glory Day

TUESDAY was a day of glory for the Ministry of External Affairs with three honours in a day. Less than 24 hours after its launch on Monday,‘MEAIndia’ app topped the charts of the Apple’s iTunes Store. And,the newly constructed Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan building which was built at the cost of about Rs 232 cr,got a Gold rating for energy conservation measures and,for being a green building. And not to be outdone, the Hyderabad House — maintained by MEA’s protocol division — was awarded the best maintained government building.

Unusual Practice

THE Women and Child Development Ministry was stumped earlier this week when it came to know that while arguing a petition on increasing the honorarium given to anganwadi workers, solicitor general Mohan Parasaran had in April “assured” the SC that “he would make an effort to convene the meeting of all concerned secretaries of the state governments and UTs” to evolve a uniform formula. It is not standard practice for law officers to convene meetings of state bureaucrats or to promise to do so. Nevertheless, given that the matter pertains to the apex court, the ministry has now hurriedly convened a meeting.
