The Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday said that a 23-year-old Indian was killed in gun and bomb attacks,by Islamist insurgents,in the northern Nigerian city of Kano on Friday. The attacks have claimed at least 178 lives.

The Indian High Commission in Abuja said in a statement,“We have learnt that a 23-year old Indian national Mr Kevalkumar Kalidas Rajput has lost his life. The unfortunate deceased belonged to Devgad Baria,Sanchagalo,Dahod in Gujarat state. He was working for Kano-based company M/s Relchem since March 2011.”

The statement also said that six other Indian nationals,including two small children were injured in the blasts. It emphasised the need for Indian nationals to observe a security advisory issued on January 17 this year,which called for vigilance when in the country.

The death toll from the attacks in Kano rose to at least 178,a doctor in its main hospital said on Sunday,making this by far the deadliest attack by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

Meanwhile,explosions struck two churches in the northern Nigerian city of Bauchi Sunday,witnesses said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
