Outlining the measures India had taken to strengthen its nuclear security,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday reiterated Indias claim to the four multilateral export control regimes which, between themselves, govern international exchange of all sensitive technologies from conventional arms to nuclear, chemical and biological weapons to weapons of mass destruction.
India has been seeking full membership of these four exclusive clubs Nuclear Suppliers Group,Wassenaar Arrangement,Australia Group and Missile Technology Control Regime for quite some time now on the strength of the fact that it was a responsible nuclear power.
India has never been a source of proliferation of sensitive technologies and we are determined to further strengthen our export control systems to keep them on par with the highest international standards…. As a like-minded country…,we believe that the next logical step is Indias membership of the four export control regimes, the PM said while addressing the Nuclear Security Summit.
Several countries, including the US,have been supportive of Indias bid for membership.
