India calls for fair treaty on N-weapons

Calling for a non-discriminatory and internationally verifiable treaty banning the future production of fissile material for nuclear weapons,New Delhi Tuesday said progressive steps are needed to de-legitimise atomic arsenals.

It said the international legal framework on space security needs to be strengthened. India is convinced that the goal of nuclear disarmament can be achieved through a step-by-step process underwritten by a universal commitment and an agreed multilateral framework that is global and non-discriminatory, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said in Geneva. He said there is a need for a meaningful dialogue among all states with nuclear weapons to reduce the salience of nuclear weapons.
