In jail,Bibi Jagir Kaur goes back to her first job — teaching

Old sayings have a great relevance even in today’s fast moving world and Bibi Jagir Kaur is the perfect example of one famous saying — ‘history repeats itself’. Bibi,who started her career as a mathematics teacher but left the position over two decades ago to join politics,has again taken up a teaching job — though not by choice.

Since Wednesday,Bibi has started teaching women prisoners at the Kapurthala jail — she was assigned this job on Tuesday as she is a ‘Category B’ prisoner,who is exempted from hard labour.

Instead of mathematics,however,she was teaching religious lessons to her fellow inmates. “However,with her relatives and other politicians coming to see her,she could take out little time to take classes today,” said a jail official.

Bibi had started her teaching career in 1978 and served as a mathematics teacher till 1988 before joining politics. Now,in jail after being convicted for five years in the forced abortion case of her daughter Harpreet Kaur.

Born on October 15,1954,Bibi did her graduation from Government College for Girls in Chandigarh and later pursued a degree in Education from MGN College,Jalandhar. She was then appointed as a government school teacher at Begowal Secondary School.

She also headed the Sant Prem Singh Muralewale dera at Begowal before joining politics.
