Police are learnt to have gathered conclusive evidence to show that boxer Vijender Singh had been in regular and sustained touch with Anoop Singh Kahlon alias Ruby, the alleged Canadian drug dealer who was arrested by the Fatehgarh Sahib police on March 3.
Following the interrogation of Kahlon and his associate Rocky, who was also arrested, police recovered drugs worth Rs 130 crore from Kahlons house in Zirakpur on March 7.
Sources close to the investigation said police were in the process of building a watertight case against Vijender whose links with drugs allegedly ran deeper than having occasionally tried heroin for fun,as the boxers former sparring partner and NIS Patiala roommate Ram Singh has claimed.
Ram Singh has already been dismissed from his job in the Punjab Police for being a drug consumer. Vijender himself is a DSP in the Haryana Police.
Investigators are learnt to be in possession of call records that show Vijender and Kahlon to have been in regular touch since at least August 2012. The records are believed to show closer ties between Kahlon and Ram Singh.
Both Vijender and Ram Singh knew about Kahlons activities, the sources said. The three men travelled together to Delhi, and were seen together at public functions in the capital. Police have pictures of Kahlon and Vijender at the inauguration of a hotel in Delhi; sources said they had planned to run the hotels bar together, but it did not work out.
Vijender and Kahlon allegedly exchanged SMSes on August 12 and spoke at 11 am,12.42 pm,1.38 pm and 6 pm on that day. These calls were made from Chandigarh.
On August 22,Kahlon and Vijender exchanged a slew of calls between 1.24 pm and 3.50 pm. In between,at 2.42 pm,Ram Singh called Kahlon. The way these calls moved between towers suggests that Vijender and Ram Singh were on their way to Kahlons Zirakpur house, police sources said.
Kahlon and Vijender spoke again at 5 pm on August 24,and at 11.40 am on August 28,call records available with the police show. A period of silence followed, during which Kahlon was in Canada to be broken when he returned to India in February 2013,the sources said.
On February 22,Vijender called Kahlon at 8.20 pm and had a long conversation. On February 26,five days before Kahlon was arrested,Vijender allegedly exchanged more than 10 SMSes with him.
Ram Singhs call details, also a part of police records, show he spoke to Kahlon on nearly 30 occasions in August 2012,sometimes several times in a day. They spoke 25 times in September and 23 times in October. In February,Kahlon and Ram Singh spoke 13 times.
On the night of February 26,Kahlon and Ram Singh began a conversation at 10.44 which, after two more calls, spilled past midnight. The next day,Kahlon called Ram Singh at 10.21 am and 4.36 pm. Ram Singh called him in between at 1.31 pm.
Kahlon is learnt to have told his interrogators that most of these conversations preceded or followed a meeting of the three men at his Zirakpur home. The mobile phone tower locations of the three show them to have been in the same area on most of these days, police sources said.
The sources said Vijender had told police that he would accompany Ram Singh to Kahlons house and wait in the car outside while Ram went in. About his phone conversations with Kahlon,Vijender has apparently taken the line that as a celebrity,he is often required to speak with people whom he does not know.
Vijenders car registered in his wifes name was found outside Kahlons residence when the contraband was recovered. Vijender has said the car was being used by Ram while he was in Mumbai.
Asked for a comment on Saturday,Vijender told The Sunday Express in a text message: I am not aware of such calls and nobody from the police has contacted me regarding the calls. At the camp,my roommates often used my phone and it is not in my knowledge about these calls.
The Punjab Police are likely to move court on Monday to force Vijender to let police collect his hair and blood samples for tests. The one-page request to the judicial magistrate was being studied by the district attorneys office on Saturday. The application is yet to be filed in the court. We are examining it, Amrik Singh, district attorney,Fatehgarh Sahib, said.
Vijender said by SMS: I have not been approached by the Fatehgarh police officials after the first interrogation. I have only read media reports that they want to go to court to collect my hair and blood samples. I am not willing to give my samples to Punjab Police. I am willing to give (them) to any international level agency.
