For the third straight year,a record number of Kashmiris have cracked the IAS exam. Eight young men and women have made it to the list,three of them in the top 100. Last year,six had qualified.
Khursheed Ali Qadri of north Kashmirs Pattan credits his family for his success. This was my third attempt. I was inspired by my classmates in Delhi whom I had seen preparing for the exam. I thought if they can do it,why cant I? Qadri said.
Qadri,who was ranked 95,had earlier qualified for the Kashmir Administrative Services and is now an assistant director in the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution. Civil service is not an end. There are other opportunities for students to excel. Students from Kashmir are talented and their talent needs to be harnessed properly, he said.
For Adnan Asmi,27,of Srinagar,a dream has come true. I always dreamed to qualify for civil services. This was my third attempt. I was disappointed after failing earlier but my family and friends gave me emotional support. Without them it would never have been possible, he said.
Now that he has made it,Asmi hopes to do something for Kashmir. Kashmir will always remain in my mind,depending upon the post I get. I will try to work and justify my position, he said.
Dr Ruvaida Salam,who hails from Farkiya,a remote village in the frontier district of Kupwara,qualified for the KAS in 2009 but that wasnt enough. She pressed on and managed to clear the IAS this year.
Showkat Ahmad Parray,of Vizer in Baramulla,qualified IAS in 2009 but wasnt impressed with his rank of 256. So he sat again for the exam this year and secured 41st rank.
Sherish Asgar topped the KAS in 2011 but refused to rest on her laurels. She attempted the IAS in 2012 but her rank only qualified her for the Indian Police Service. She tried again this year and secured 23rd rank. The other three Kashmiris who cracked the exam this year are Naveed Tramboo,Abid Sadiq and Amanullah Tak.
