Over the past one week,at least three cases of abduction of non-Manipuris have been reported here.
On Tuesday, the police recovered the body of a young man,who had been murdered, from a field in Keirao Bitra area. His face had been smashed and a part of it eaten by,the police assume, stray dogs.
On Wednesday, the police identified him as Abhishek Kumar (26) from Nahar Moutikara village in Varanasi,UP. Abhishek, missing for a week, used to work in a hardware store at Thangal Bazaar, where the non-Manipuri population stays and works.
Abhishek had been abducted from near a temple in the area.
In the second incident,Tej Narayan Yadav (35),who had been abducted on Tuesday, was rescued on Wednesday. Originally from Bihar,he stays at Nagamapal, opposite Thangal Bazaar.
We had received a tip off and a police team was sent, who found Yadav tied in the middle of a field under a hill in Keibi. There was an encounter and two of his abductors were killed, one got away, said SP,Imphal West,Nishit Kumar Ujjwal.
Yadav was taken away from his residence on the pretext of hiring him for construction work. The police said the ransom demand was Rs 5 lakh.
The third case was that of Bunty,a labourer from Bihar, who has been missing for a week now. The police are careful not to describe these as hate crimes. No underground group has claimed responsibility so far, Ujjwal said.
