Emotions ran high as Sarabjit Singhs body arrived at Amritsar airport about 7.30 pm on Thursday,from where it was taken to his village Bhikhiwind. The body was then sent
for autopsy,before the last rites Friday.
A panel of five doctors from Amritsar Medical College was roped in to conduct the post mortem.
Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal,state minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur were among those who accompanied the body in the IAF chopper from Amritsar to Bhikhiwind.
There was some delay due to an issue of Customs clearance in Pakistan, said Preneet Kaur.
Earlier in the day,Sarabjits wife Sukhpreet,sister Dalbir Kaur and daughters Swapandeep and Poonam were also flown home in a helicopter from Amritsar. A temporary helipad was created at Bhagwanpur village.
I have lost everything, said Dalbir,as she got off the chopper.
I failed to bring the father of these children back home. I want to know why he had to die, she said.
No shops in the village opened in the morning after news of his death came in. Some people gathered outside the gurdwara and protested against Pakistan.
