A chapter on the life of M F Husain has been struck out from a NCERT book following a decision by the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education.
The decision was taken at the Boards review committee meeting held recently. The rationale for the decision was that this chapter did not include any material to inspire students.
The board has decided to replace it with a chapter on another acclaimed painter Sobha Singh,in whose name the state has set up an art gallery at Andretta in Kangra district.
Board chairman Dr C L Gupta confirmed the decision to strike out the chapter on Husain from the Class XI Hindi book. There was a small chapter on the life of Husain, which did not even talk about any of his acclaimed works. When there was no element in it to inspire the students,we decided to exclude it from session 2010-11, he told The Indian Express. Apart from introducing Sobha Singh,we are thinking of having a chapter on famous Russain painter Nicholas Roerich, who settled in Himachal.
The Hindi book was introduced in the state board’s syllabi three years ago when the NCERT pattern was adopted. Since the books with the chapter on Husain have been printed for the current session, schools have been instructed not to include the chapter in the syllabus for examinations.
