Hollande sworn in as French president

Francois Hollande was sworn in as France’s first Socialist president in 17 years in a brief ceremony on Tuesday.

Francois Hollande was sworn in as France’s first Socialist president in 17 years in a brief ceremony on Tuesday.

In his inaugural speech,Hollande said he would seek to amend a European deficit pact. Hollande,who succeeded Nicolas Sarkozy,named Jean-Marc Ayrault,the leader of the Socialists in the lower house,as his new prime minister.

Later in the day,Hollande’s plane was struck by lightning as he was flying to Berlin to challenge German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s austerity prescription for Europe. No one was hurt and the plane returned to Paris.
