Former Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, who had earlier said he was maintaining a distance from the India Against Corruption (IAC),seems to be back. He is set to attend a series of rallies in poll-bound Goa on February 29 and March 1. He was also with Anna Hazare and his team during their meeting with CEC S Y Quraishi on Thursday.
I did not agree with some of the decisions and statements of Team Anna like when one of them called for a plebiscite in Kashmir, and had openly opposed the decision to campaign in Hisar. But I always had a very good relationship with Anna, had attended his fast in Mumbai, and want to take forward the agenda of electoral reforms and anti-corruption. I will address public meetings in Goa possibly along with Arvind Kejriwal, but I will not speak for any political party. I want to create awareness among voters, he said.
In their one-and-a-half hour meeting with Quraishi, where Kejriwal,Prashant Bhushan and Kiran Bedi were also present,Team Anna talked about the right to reject. They said that the present option of form 49-O is cumbersome and therefore, there should be a button in the EVM giving people a none of the above option. They told Quraishi that in the present system of counting where it is possible to know which areas voted for which candidate exposes voters to possible victimisation by political parties and this should stop. The CEC is said to have expressed in principle agreement with the issues highlighted by Team Anna.
The CEC said theres already a technology in place called totaliser that scrambles votes from various machines and gives out only a total. They are ready,it seems the government is not, Hegde said.
