Minutes before he left for the rescue operation from Barrackpore-base 157 Helicopter Unit,Wing Commander Darryl Castelino,38,told his wife Jyothi,“Main apne desh ki seva main ja raha hoon”.

The couple, married for ten years, and always the most “watched” dancing partners, reveled in the comic conversation. “She says they laughed a lot that moment,he was always humorous, making sure she laughed,” said Jyothi’s brother Reynold Olivera.

On Tuesday,Jyothi was watching TV at their Kolkata residence when she heard the anchor’s first words. “She didn’t wait for any confirmation. She just knew when she saw the details of the aircraft. She called us immediately,” Olivera said.

The Mi 17 V5 helicopter ferrying rescue personnel from Kedarnath to Gauchar crashed Tuesday killing all 20 on board.

Castelino and Jyothi have two children Ethan,8,and Angelina,5.

“He had bought a home for Jyothi and the children in Bangalore. A letter regarding possession of the new house was received when we returned after meeting the unit,” said Olivera.
