The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the state government not to allow the transport of 247 tonnes of toxic waste from Bhopals Union Carbide factory into state limits.
Hearing a PIL filed by BJP legislator Devendra Fadnavis,Vidarbha Environmental Action Group and another city organisation Jan Manch,the Bench of Justices Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Pramod Kode granted a two-day stay on the transportation of the material. The Bench also issued notices to a host of respondents which included Union Defence,Chemicals and Environment secretaries,Central and state pollution control boards,Nagpur Municipal Corporation,National Environmental Engineering Research Institute,Madhya Pradesh governments Principal Secretary (Home) and Deputy Inspector General of Police,Nagpur.
