Hazare breaks fast after LS passes Lokpal Bill

Says will now work towards a watchdog for Lokpal & Lokayukta.

Veteran anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare broke his 18th indefinite fast on the ninth day after the Lok Sabha passed the amended Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill,2011,on Wednesday. He announced that he will now work towards creating a watchdog to keep an eye on the setting up of Lokpal and Lokayukta machinery and working of the Lokpal.

Hazare congratulated the Congress,BJP and “all other parties except Samajwadi Party” and gave special thanks to members of the select committee for strengthening the Bill.

“The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in December 2011 but that was a weak Bill. When this Bill came in Rajya Sabha it was rejected and was referred to the select committee for revision. The committee strengthened this draft and today the Bill is up to the expectation of the people. Hence the select committee deserves special congratulations,” Hazare said.

He congratulated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, except those of the SP who had opposed the Bill. “You have taken a good step. For the first time since Independence,a law capable of curbing corruption has been enacted by Parliament,” he said.

In his “victory speech”,Hazare said he will now work to set up a watchdog. “The law has finally come but it’s not enough. Now,we have a bigger responsibility. We will have to see that it’s properly implemented. We will have to form a watchdog committee which will comprise retired judges, senior police officials and other learned and experienced men with impeccable record to keep an eye on the implementation of the Act and to see if the Lokpal machinery works properly,” he said, adding that those with above mentioned criteria should contact his office.

“We will also set up committees at the state, district and block levels to monitor implementation of the Lokpal Bill across India,” he said.

“We will get in touch with all those who got associated with us due to this movement. We will chose selfless workers and try to set up a national-level organisation which will make sure that the Lokpal Bill is implemented,” he said. He urged supporters to provide money to set up such an organisation. “We will need money to create such a set up. There are 120 crore people in this country. Even if every person donates Rs 5,we will have more than enough money,” he said.

As soon as the announcement of passage of the Bill was made, the crowd at the protest site in Ralegan Siddhi broke into celebrations. “This is a result of the three-year tapasya of our Annaji. It’s a matter of pride for our village that one of our residents could shake up the Union government sitting here,” Nanasaheb Auti, former sarpanch of the village, said.

Anna takes a dig at AAP

RALEGAN SIDDHI: Taking a dig at AAP leaders,Anna Hazare said he will try to organise all people who are ready to work for society selflessly to keep a vigil on working of the Lokpal, but will avoid those “who indulge in wrong things by taking Anna Hazare’s name”. “We will get in touch with motivated and selfless people but will avoid such who use Anna Hazare’s name to do wrong things,” said the activist. AAP leaders have been opposing the current draft of the Lokpal Bill which has now been passed by both Houses of Parliament. ENS
