The Vigilance and Enforcement wing of the Haryana Power Utilities has detected 3,612 cases of theft of electricity and imposed a penalty of Rs 38.40 crore on the erring consumers up to February of the current fiscal.
The penalty of over Rs 4 lakh had been levied in 123 of these cases,which included industrial and non-domestic connections,an official spokesman said.
The amount of penalty exceeded Rs 50,000 in as many as 1,713 cases of theft of electricity and unauthorised extension of load. The electricity supply of the erring consumers had been disconnected immediately as per the existing instructions,he said.
Under ongoing campaign to check the menace of pilferage of power,unauthorised use of electricity and unauthorised extension of load,special checking of 15,694 consumer premises was carried out by targeting high loss feeders.
“It was observed that the consumers involved in theft of electricity had been stealing power by directly tapping the supply lines,using magnet for stopping the energy recording meters,tampering of meter seals and other unauthorised means.
The meter terminal cover seals or the meter seals were also found missing,broken or tampered in some of these cases,” he added.
