A middle-aged priest of a Lord Shiva temple killed four persons — three sadhus and a youth — and then hanged himself early on Sunday at Iyava village in Sanand taluka,some 20 km from Ahmedabad city. Three other persons including the main priest of the temple sustained serious head injuries in the incident,police said.

According to reports,there were eight persons including five saints sleeping in the Nilkanth Mahadev temple that belongs to Nath sect (cult). “At 5 am,priest Dharamnath started attacking everyone sleeping in the temple with a heavy iron rod including the main priest of the temple,Somdnath Bapu. But one the villagers Mahavirsinh Vaghela somehow managed to escape and informed the villagers about the incident,” R K Patel,DSP,Ahmedabad district,said.

Soon after the information,a group of villagers entered the temple premises and found Dharamnath who had already poured kerosene on the injured persons and was trying to set them on fire. Seeing the villagers,he immediately disappeared. But soon he was found hanging from the dome of the temple,Patel said.

“The villagers rush the victims to hospital but on their way,five of them succumbed to their injuries. In the incident,three saints (yet to be identified),who had come from somewhere else on Saturday night,and a villager,identified as Prithvirajsinh Vaghela,died,” said Patel.

The injured have been admitted to VS Hospital while one of them is being treated at a private nursing home.

Villagers said by 3 am the preparation was over and everyone left the temple except three villagers and four saints who went to sleep in the temple premises. At around 5 am,Dharamnath started hitting everyone with an iron rod one by one. All of them suffered head injuries.
