Gujarat Police chief dies while on vacation in Thailand

Gujarat Director General of Police Amitabh Pathak died of a heart attack on Friday while holidaying with his family in southern Thailand.

Gujarat Director General of Police Amitabh Pathak died of a heart attack on Friday while holidaying with his family in southern Thailand.

Pathak,58,died while he was swimming,officials of the Indian Embassy in Bangkok told PTI. He is survived by his wife,a son and a daughter. Pathak’s body was sent to Krabi town,60 km from Phuket. Indian Ambassador Anil Wadhwa said the mission was extending all assistance to Pathak’s family.

Pathak had collapsed during Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the Independence Day function in Bhuj. He was lifted by policemen and sent to his residence in Ahmedabad. Sources close to him said he took a break till September 3 to rest.

Pathak’s death came as a shock for IPS officers here; some couldn’t believe that he was no more until the state government issued an internal note about his demise.

Modi tweeted,“In Amitabh Pathak,Gujarat has lost a dedicated officer. The state will always remember his services. Spoke to his son and offered condolences.”

In-charge DGP Pramod Kumar confirmed the news on Friday evening.

Pathak,an IPS officer of the 1977 batch,was appointed as Director General of Police on February 27. He had received the President’s medal for distinguished services this Independence Day.

Pathak had pledged to work on police reforms and betterment of lower constabulary. He was one of the few DGPs who called media briefings to discuss agendas and pushed for the appointment of public relation officers in every commissionerate and district police.
