In a bid to woo Muslims, the BJP’s Surat unit plans to hold a function here on Sunday in which several members of the minority community are expected to join the ruling party.

The event,to be called,“Muslim Samaj Maha Sammelan”,is scheduled to be held at Limbayat,a pre-dominantly Muslim area.

Though Chief Minister Narendra Modi himself will likely be away at Pathankot in Punjab on Sunday to attend a function, the event’s organisers have invited state’s Revenue Minister Anandi and BJP MP in Rajya Sabha Bharatsinh Parmar. Surat MP C R Patil is also likely to be present along with city BJP president Purnesh Modi and several party MLAs.

“We support Modi as BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 elections. We are expecting 15,000-strong turnout at the public meeting where Muslim youths, who were earlier with the Congress, will join BJP in hordes. We have been loyal to the Congress for long but even their municipal councillor do not listen to our issues,” said Raees Pathan, one of the organisers.

Patil said,“We welcome all who want to join the BJP. We are happy Muslims are joining the BJP on their own.”

Banners inviting people to attend the function have come up across Limbayat.

Saeeda Pathan,a BJP worker, said,“We want to spread the message that Muslims are also with the BJP. The time has come that Muslims step ahead and support Narendra Modi who is being projected as a prime ministerial candidate.”
