With the government finding itself in a spot after deficient monsoon adversely affected rice output this year, the government on Tuesday said that it would release about 30 lakh tonnes of wheat in the open market to keep a check on the foodgrain prices in the domestic market.
Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas told reporters that the government would release this quantity of wheat during the next six months till the arrival of wheat in the markets from the rabi crop in April.
Keeping in view the likely reduced production of foodgrains in kharif 2009-10,there is a need to conserve stocks of foodgrains. Therefore,it is not feasible to permit export of wheat, Thomas said on the sidelines of a function in the capital.
Though the government has yet not come out with the first advance estimates of agricultural production, senior officialsrevealed that the rice output this year may fall short of the domestic demand by about 15 million tonnes.
