Anil Goswami,a 1978 batch IAS officer,has been selected as the next Home Secretary,the first officer from Jammu and Kashmir cadre to be appointed to this powerful post. Goswamis appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Goswami will join the Home Ministry as Officer on Special Duty from May 1 and take over from present Home Secretary R K Singh after his term ends on June 30.
Goswami is not new to the MHA,having served earlier as Special Secretary (Foreigners) in the North Block. He was serving as Secretary,Department of Social Justice & Empowerment.
It is the first time that an incoming Home Secretary has been given two months as OSD in the ministry. R K Singh and his predecessor G K Pillai had also served as OSDs before taking over the top post,but their duration was shorter. As OSD,Goswami will work closely with R K Singh.
