Samajwadi Party SP workers on Saturday night stormed the Meja police station in the district and set free two party supporters from the lock-up. While the attackers were yet to be arrested, the Station Officer SO,along with two other policemen, has been transferred with immediate effect.
A case was registered against the SO and the other policemen, allegedly for beating up men in custody.
Another case was registered against the assailants for obstructing the police in discharge of their duty and damaging government property.
SP Trans-Yamuna Sarvesh Kumar Rana said Ajay Shukla,a head constable in the Railway Protection Force, and his brother Vijay Shukla, residents of Hulka village in Meja, were getting a kutcha house, which they had bought from one Raja Shukla, levelled on Saturday evening, when their uncle Rajesh Shukla arrived and objected. Ajay and Vijay are known to be SP supporters in the area.
An argument ensued leading to violence as more persons from both sides joined. SO Meja Ram Chandra Dikshit and Sub-Inspector Adya Prasad Pandey reached the village to sort out the matter, the police said.
When the two groups did not pay heed, the police took five persons from both the groups, including Ajay and Vijay,in their custody and brought them to the police station.
Around midnight, one Lallan Singh,a local SP leader, along with some supporters, reached the police station and demanded release of the brothers.
He also alleged that they were being beaten up by the police. After creating ruckus in the police station, the protesters snatched the keys to the lock-up from the police personnel and got their associates freed.
