The Archeological Survey of India ASI has finally hit natural soil in the second trench in Unnao,without finding any trace of gold in the ruins of Raja Rao Ram Bux Singhs fort in Daundiya Kheda.
The ASI had earlier said that excavation at the site will stop when natural soil is discovered.
The ASI had started the excavation after local seer,Shobhan Sarkar,reportedly dreamt of the presence of buried gold at the fort.
We found natural soil in the second trench on Wednesday. Today Thursday,the excavation continued and the artefacts were documented and packed. We have sent the report of the finding natural soil to the Director Generals office and are awaiting their instructions, said P K Mishra,Superintending Archeologist,Lucknow Circle,ASI.
Earlier,Dr Syed Jamal Hasan,Director Exploration and Excavation,ASI had told The Indian Express that excavation will stop when archaeologists find natural soil in the second trench.
The second trench has been dug to a depth of 6.10 metres. The excavation in the first trench was stopped at 5.9 metres. Mishra said the work would be temporarily suspended owing to Muharram and Kartik Purnima. We will resume work on November 18 and the decision on whether to continue excavation or not will be taken then by the DG office, said Mishra.
The ASI had started the excavation in the first trench on October 18. So far,archaeologists have only found cultural deposits like pieces of pottery,but no trace of gold.
