The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has fielded the prime accused in the Madan Tamang murder case as its candidate for the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) election.

GJM president Bimal Gurung on Monday said that Dipen Maley, who was arrested by the CBI and is currently in Darjeeling jail, will contest the GTA election from Pokhriabong seat. The decision was announced after a marathon meeting with the party’s central committee members in the Gymkhana Club in Darjeeling.

Maley was arrested by the CBI as one of the prime accused in connection with the murder of ABGL leader Madan Tamang. Tamang was killed in the hill town of Darjeeling on May 21,2010 while overseeing preparations for a public meeting. He was hacked to death allegedly by a mob. The CBI arrested Maley on May 25,2011 from his residence in Pokhriabong,30 km from Darjeeling town.

Asked about Maley’s candidature,Gurung said,“Maley is innocent. He was framed in the case. He is a responsible leader and we trust him.”

GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said,“Maley is a trusted leader of the GJM. He deserves the responsibility. We have announced only one name today and it is of Dipen Maley. We discussed the issue with all the senior leaders of the party and everybody agreed.”

The CBI earlier had claimed that while Maley was in custody, they had managed to unearth incriminating evidence against him. The CBI also claimed that among the previous arrests in this case, three persons had named Maley and one of them spoke about Maley’s involvement in front of magistrate under Section 164 CrPC (confession before a magistrate.)

Two cellphones and four SIM cards had been seized from Maley which, according to the CBI,shed light on the investigation. Maley has been charged under Sections 302 (murder),506 (criminal intimidation),120B (criminal conspiracy),147 (rioting),148 (rioting with deadly weapon),149 (unlawful assembly) and Additional Section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention.) of the IPC. Gurung will go to Kalimpong to attend a sub-divisional committee meeting of the party, during which the names of the other candidates are expected to be finalised.
