Police in Jodhpur have arrested a Rajasthan Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) contractor in connection with the suspected kidnapping of auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) Bhanwari Devi, who is reportedly in possession of a CD that purportedly contains a video of a Rajasthan minister in a compromising position.
Devis disappearance was first reported last week by ETV Rajasthan, which said she had the CD. The BJP,which organised a protest in Jaipur today, demanded the resignation of Rajasthan PHED and Water Resources Minister Mahipal Maderna, alleging he was the minister in the CD.
Late on Wednesday evening,Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recommended a CBI probe into Devis disappearance. Sources in the government said the decision to ask for the CBI was taken after state home minister Shanti Dhariwal spoke to Maderna.
Maderna, who had steadfastly refused comment on the issue through the day, said,If there are so many allegations against me then let there be a CBI probe and the truth will come out.
Also on Wednesday night, reports surfaced that Devis body had been found in Jhansi. Jodhpur inspector-general of police,Umesh Mishra, however, denied the reports and maintained that the investigation into her disappearance was ongoing.
Senior police officers in Jodhpur said that a court on Tuesday denied them permission to carry out a lie-detector test on the contractor,Sohan Lal Bishnoi, who is considered close to Maderna. I-G Mishra said,The court has denied us permission for a lie-detector test, but he (Bishnoi) will remain in police custody till September 16.
The police believe that Devi went missing after she sold her car to Bishnoi last week and went with him to Bhilara to collect the money.
Senior police officers said that though they were officially looking into Devis disappearance, the CD was also part of the investigation. Sources said the CD was supposedly recorded in 2009.
Earlier in the day,BJP state president Arun Chaturvedi told The Indian Express that the allegations against Maderna were serious and that he must resign.
