In a sign of Asaram Bapus diminishing clout in Madhya Pradesh, the place he often chose when faced with trouble, the main gate of his ashram on Khandwa Road,Indore, was pulled down by the administration Saturday.
It was the same ashram from where he was arrested in the sexual assault case about a month ago. Before his arrest,he had warned the Rajasthan government that it would pay a price in the ensuing elections. Several Madhya Pradesh BJP leaders had also rushed to his defence.
Since then, things have changed for Asaram, with many of his properties coming under scanner. A week ago,the Indore administration asked the trust to demolish the gate, saying the state road development corporation had not given permission for it.
Though the gate was constructed long ago on encroached land,it took the self-styled godmans arrest for the administration to begin the process to demolish it. Few supporters gathered Saturday morning when the demolition was on,but the number did not pose any problem for the demolition squad.
Meanwhile,Asarams website continues to describe him as innocent and his arrest a conspiracy against Hindu saints.
