Gangster Abu Salem,an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, was allegedly shot at inside the Taloja central jail on Thursday night by Devendra Jagtap, the main accused in the murder of lawyer Shahid Azmi. Police said Salem was injured in a finger on his right hand.
According to sources, the attack occurred at around 9.30 pm. Salem was inside his cell when Jagtap allegedly shot at him with a country-made gun. Jagtap fired twice, and one of the bullets hit Salem, said Navi Mumbai police commissioner A K Sharma.
The motive is unclear at this stage. Jagtap had a court appearance in Mumbai on Thursday morning,we are investigating if someone slipped him the gun during that time, said Sharma.
Jagtap is set to be charged with attempt to murder. Jagtap was arrested with two others on February 16,2010,for allegedly killing Azmi,at the behest of gangster Bharat Nepali. Azmi was then representing Fahim Ansari, who was a co-accused in the 26/11 case.
This is the second time that Salem has been attacked inside jail. On July 24,2010,gangster Mustafa Dossa had attacked Salem with a sharpened spoon inside Arthur Road jail.
