Two Punjab policemen, deployed as part of the security detail of state Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka, were killed Thursday after falling off the escort car.

The minister was in another vehicle and escaped unhurt. The incident occurred at about 9.15 am on Chandigarh-Delhi highway. The deceased have been identified as Harbans Singh and Gurmeet Singh, hailing from Bathinda and Mansa, respectively.

Police sources say the driver of the pilot car,a Maruti Gypsy, was forced to suddenly apply brakes after noticing a severed high tension electricity cable on the road near Rai-Kundli barrier in Haryana’s Sonepat. “The policemen, sitting in the back of the vehicle, fell off when the brakes were applied. As there was no divider on that stretch, they rolled on to the adjacent lane and got crushed under the wheels of an SUV coming from the opposite direction,” Maluka told PTI.The minister was on his way to Delhi to attend a meeting.

Rajpal Singh,SHO Kundali police station, said,“The driver of the ministers car noticed the cable and managed to dodge it. However, the driver of the Gypsy spotted it late and hit the brakes at the last moment resulting in both Harbans and Gurmeet falling off the car.” Eyewitnesses said Maluka stopped on the spot for a while and resumed his journey. By the time Haryana Police personnel reached the spot,Maluka had left.
