A few seconds after the Coromandel Express crossed the Jajpur-Keonjhar Road railway station,MBBS student Rahul Sarkar was in a position no medical student would want to be.

The 1st year MBBS student at Sri Satyasai Medical College of Chennai sitting in the upper berth of the S1 sleeper bogie was waiting for his dinner at 7.50 pm when he felt a sudden jerk. He held onto an iron bar supporting his seat,as his coach went for a spin after the train running at 110 km per hour speed derailed about 100 metres from the station. But his reflex reaction was of no use as he was violently thrown around and then tossed to the floor which injured his back and right leg.

Sarkar was lucky to be alive as several passengers in his compartment died as other sleeper coaches piled on to this coach in the accident.

Of the nine dead, only four had been identified till morning. They are Hemant Bhalotia (31) and Laxminarayan Manna from Kolkata, railway engineer Asit Kumar Sinha (36) from Jajpur district and Dr Pawan Pillai (48) from Berhampur in Orissa.
