Five of family killed over land dispute

Ramel Thappa and his sons were attacked by members of rival Majhi family with axes and sticks while the former were trying to till the land

Five family members were killed and four injured in a clash between members of two tribal families over a land dispute at Thapapalli village in Bolangir district on Sunday.

Ramel Thappa and his sons were attacked by members of rival Majhi family with axes and sticks while the former were trying to till the land. Bolangir Additional SP Prafulla Patra said the Majhis and Thappas were at loggerheads over cultivating a patch of grazing land.

Ramel and his sons Kapil,Kunu,Jagdish and Madrasi were killed on the spot.

Thappa’s daughter and eyewitness,Karuna said,“More than 10 members of Sankarsan Majhi family attacked my father and brothers. They hacked my family.”

The police said the Majhis were angry over the alleged involvement of the Thappa family in the murder of one of their members during the 2012 panchayat polls. Three members of Majhi family have been arrested.
