After unsuccessful missions led by Italian defence and foreign ministers to free their two marines jailed in connection with the killing of fishermen in firing off the Kerala coast last month, two priests paid a visit to the house of one of the slain fishermen in a bid to ease the situation.

Although the Catholic diocese of Kollam ruled out playing mediator to settle the murder case, police said the Italian priests were accompanied by local priests from the social service wing of the diocese.

The Italian priests visited the house of killed fisherman Jelestine and consoled his family members, apart from praying at his grave in the local church. Earlier, the state government had denied permission for the Italian delegation to visit the families of the killed fishermen fearing local people’s wrath.

Kollam diocese spokesperson Fr George Rebeiro said the Church was not involved in any mediation. “We respect the rule and legal system of the country,” he said.
