Munir Khan, the self-proclaimed scientist currently on the run from the Mumbai police for allegedly running a bogus drug racket worth crores, has come a long way from his first job as a railway contractor in Rajasthans education hub of Kota. Before his dubious miracle cure for cancer and most other serious diseases made him millions,Khan attempted several bids at making fast money in Kota and even dabbled in politics, unsuccessfully contesting the Assembly and parliamentary elections two decades ago.

Khans clinic and lab were raided on October 27 following several complaints that his medicine was nothing but a mixture of honey, water and spirits. The police registered a complaint of cheating as well as violations under various Sections of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act against Khan.

Neighbours of the former resident of Vigyan Nagar in Kota said that he left the city 15 years ago after developing Body Revive, his miracle cure. We all knew him,but he never mingled with us. Before moving to Mumbai,he used to sell his medicine here, neighbour Dr P K Jain recalled. Khans two-storey house has been locked up for years now.

An old friend of Khan, who did not wish to be named, claimed that he was always on the lookout to make easy money. He had a job as a railway contractor, but was never satisfied, the friend said.

Khan, however, remained in touch with Kota and sponsored 25 Haj travellers every year and helped build madrasas,he added.

The friend claimed that he fell out with Khan after his cure failed. A textile worker whose daughter was in the last stage of cancer heard of Khans cure on TV. He went to Mumbai and paid around Rs 15,000 for a bottle of medicine. But his daughter died, the friend said.

Khans son Saroj told The Indian Express that his father worked on Body Revive for years. Papa always had a fascination for Ayurveda. Even as a child I remember him constantly experimenting with medicines on himself until he invented Body Revive, Saroj said. Only this year,Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala presented an award to my father, and in 2005,the then Union health minister A Ramadoss gave him an award, Saroj said.

Endorsements for Khan did not end there. Police in Mumbai said that last year, his good moral character and reputation was officially certified by a senior IAS officer. The then Divisional Commissioner of Jaipur,Niranjan Arya, who now holds the post of Commissioner of Transport, had issued a verification certificate to Khan on October 6 last year, recommending that he be issued a passport.

Only when I see the certificate and other documents will I be able to comment on whether I had issued them or not. However,I do recollect that Khan had come to meet me when I was Divisional Commissioner in Jaipur several months ago and had sought to apply for a passport, Arya told The Indian Express.

The certificate listed Khans name, age and his Mumbai address as Wood Stock Bungalow on J P Road in Versova and described him as a graduate whose profession is self business. For six years,Khan ran this now infamous business from this address and had also employed qualified medical professionals.

On October 27,the Versova police raided the clinic and arrested 17 people including six doctors, security personnel,Khans son Munish and manager Apurva Parekh. Khan, however, managed to flee.

A team had gone to Kota to collect clues, but were unable to do much as his house was locked, said Deputy Commissioner of Police,Zone IX,K M M Prasanna.

Investigations have revealed that some state governments allotted several acres of land to Khan for a factory. We will be seeking information from the Madhya Pradesh,Rajasthan and Uttarakhand governments on this. Meanwhile,we have also sent an application through the Cyber Cell to the Centre asking them to block Khans websites cancercurable.com and healthreactive.com , he added.

The police also plan to issue a red corner notice for Khan shortly if he remains on the run. Though Khan has a passport we have verified and ascertained that he has not taken a flight since the day he fled, said Prasanna.
