Fifth Jaipur Literature festival to begin on January 21

In its fifth year now,DSC Jaipur Literature Festival will again play host to authors,publishers and book lovers from 21st January to 25th January 2010,at the Diggi Palace in Jaipur.

Now in its fifth year,DSC Jaipur Literature Festival,an event described by Tina Brown in the Daily Beast as ‘the greatest literary show on earth’ will again play host to authors,publishers,lovers and connoisseurs of books from 21st January to 25th January 2010,at the Diggi Palace in Jaipur.

This forthcoming literature fest promises a stimulating mix of talks,panel discussions,lectures and readings by renowned authors from around the world along with a festival fringe of theatre,films and after sunset music. Each night the writers and literature-talk gives way to notable performers such as Susheela Raman,Titi Robin,Djaima,Rajasthan Roots and Paban Das Baul.

Jaipur Literature Festival in the past has hosted some of the world’s finest writers like Salman Rushdie,Vikram Seth,Kiran Desai,Nadeem Aslam,Pico Iyer,Thomas Keneally,Ian McEwen,Donna Tart,Nadeem Aslam,Pico Iyer,Nandan Nilekani,Suketu Mehta,Thomas Keneally,Chetan Bhagat,Nayantara Sehgal,Simon Schama,Vikas Swarup,John Berendt,Daniyal Mueenuddin,Hari Kunzru and Christopher Hampton. . Guests from the world of film include Aamir Khan,Julia Roberts and Amitabh Bachchan.

Namita Gokhale,Festival Director,DSC Jaipur Literature Festival 2010 said that the fifth edition of the fest which is again accessible to the general public at no cost is one of the biggest of its kind in the literary world. “Once again,the DSC Jaipur Literature Festival brings the world of books to life – Jaipur in January has become the spot to air ideas,to locate and question literary and cultural identity and to hear the fresh voices,” she added.


William Dalrymple,Festival Director,DSC Jaipur Literature Festival said that the literary event this year will witness leading writers from the world of history,biography,literary criticism,and travel,in addition to the stars of the world of fiction and the novel. “Besides showcasing the best of Indian-language and English writing from India,this year the festival will be importing a Nobel laureate,a winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize,two Booker winners and five winners of the Pulitzer Prize for literature,” Dalrymple elaborated.

Evening highlights during the fest include readings from Girish Karnad’s Tughlaq by acclaimed actor Om Puri,performances by Titi Robin,Cheb I Sabbah,and readings and performances from William Dalrymple’s Nine Lives,including Susheela Raman,the Bauls of Bengal,the Shah Jo Raag fakirs of Bhit Shah and more.
