With the Supreme Court refusing to entertain a contempt of court motion filed by Air India against its striking employees, the ball is back where it should be: with the government. Despite no evidence that Air India could be turned around even the Deloitte report on this was sceptical the government went ahead and cleared a Rs 30,000 crore revival package. Despite 5 years having passed, the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines is still not working the current strike is based on AI and IA pilots each lobbying for their interests and the government has done precious little to make the merger work. There’s no reason why the courts should help out the government if it doesn’t have the heart to take tough decisions. It should have offered a bailout package contingent on the airline being sold so,the buyer would have bought Air India after knowing Rs 30,000 crore of assistance would be given. It’s still not too late to cancel the bailout. Ajit Singh has hinted at this,he needs to carry out the threat.
