Face of ’02 riots says picture used without consent in movie, court orders inquiry

The court hearing the defamation case against the producer and director of Hindi film Rajdhani Express filed by Qutubuddin Ansari

The court hearing the defamation case against the producer and director of Hindi film Rajdhani Express filed by Qutubuddin Ansari, known as the face of 2002 Gujarat riots, ordered a judicial inquiry Monday to ascertain if there was sufficient ground to initiate proceedings against those named in the complaint.

Ansari, while recording his statement before the magistrate I M Sardar, said the makers of the film had used his photograph without his consent.

Explaining to the magistrate,he said his picture was taken by a photographer during the riots when his house was on fire and he is shown in it pleading before a team of Rapid Action Force to save him and his family. The picture eventually became the symbol of post-Godhra riots in the state.

When the magistrate asked Ansari why he is objecting when he is shown as “a hero in the movie,” Ansari, who is a tailor by profession, said,“My children ask me why I am being shot in the movie. All I want is that my picture should be removed from the movie. I have not been able to make my children understand what happened in 2002. How can I explain to them why I am being shot in the movie?”

According to Ansari,in the climax of the movie his picture is shown hanging at a police station and actor Jimmy Shergil (acting as a policeman) is pointing a revolver at it. Shergil looks at his picture and says he is responsible for his situation. He presses the trigger twice while pointing at the picture, though there is no bullet fired in the scene.
