With tribal votes crucial for the party’s electoral success in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, the Congress Friday roped in Tribal Affairs Minister Kishore Chandra Deo to highlight pro-tribal initiatives taken by the UPA government. Deo also argued that Naxalism cannot be treated merely as a law and order problem.

Deo listed out the initiatives of the UPA government for the tribals including the forest rights Act and the scheme for marketing of minor forest produce and the categorisation of bamboo and tendu leaves as non-timber forest produce.

“The basic idea of the forest right Act was to ensure that people in whose names rights were regularised would have free access and the free right to whatever growth is collected in that area,” he said.
