Home Minister P Chidambaram has written to his former colleagues in the world of finance and economy, seeking their support to wipe out the roots of terrorism in Pakistan.

Along with New Year greetings to Finance Ministers of 60 countries around the world, the former Finance Minister of India has sent the message: Pakistan was responsible for the Mumbai carnage of November 26-29. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has so far been at the forefront of enlisting international support for India over the attacks.

“While we are grateful for the support in these difficult times,we are anxious that the world rallies together and makes a determined effort to stamp out terrorism. Investigations are in progress into the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Based on the evidence gathered so far,the finger of suspicion unmistakably points to sources/entities operating from the territory of Pakistan,” says the letter, dated December 26.

Chidambaram has assured the global community of India’s support in fighting the financial crisis. “I can assure you that the Ministry of Finance will continue to work with you and your government in overcoming the financial crisis and the challenges that face the world’s economy,” the letter says.

In an interview with The Indian Express Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta for NDTV’s Walk the Talk,Chidambaram said that the sophistication and enormity of the Mumbai operation made it very clear that it could not have been carried out without the assistance of ‘state actors’ in Pakistan. He will be sharing some of this evidence with the US when he visits that country soon.

Chidambaram’s letter explains the “difficult circumstances” under which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was prompted to shift him into a higher gear beginning December 1. “For the present,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself has kept the Finance portfolio, underlying the importance of the tasks that face Finance Ministers all over the world,” the letter says.
