India’s top military systems development organisation came under sharp criticism from parliamentarians on Wednesday at a review meet for delays in development of critical systems, specially the Arjun tank and the Light Combat Aircraft.
Defence Minister A K Antony, who was chairing the meeting of the consultative committee on defence, also urged DRDO to complete all projects within time limits and directed that the organisation should concentrate on high-end research, particularly in critical and strategic areas.
He also told DRDO to ensure that the Initial Operational Clearance and Final Operational Clearance of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA),which is late by a decade, should also be completed as per the new schedule.
Cutting across party lines,MPs appreciated the successes of DRDO,especially in the field of missile systems. They were, however, bitterly critical of delays in the development of Main Battle Tank,LCA and the Kaveri Engine. The MPs felt that DRDO has to plan its projects keeping in mind the futuristic security needs of the country and deliver on time, a Defence Ministry spokesperson said.
At present,DRDO is carrying out as many as 532 projects pertaining to mission mode, technology demonstrator, infrastructure facilities, science and technology that are in various stages of implementation.
