MUMBAI: Post pink chaddis, the power of the undergarment can scarcely be underestimated. This poll season,Maharashtra Home Minister Jayant Patil is beefing up his basics with a line of vests and men’s knickers named after him,to be launched on Monday, his birthday,in Sangli district. The ‘Jayant’ line will be launched at a textile park in Islampur named after Patil’s late father. According to one official, they have roped in the man with the briefest of trunks for the launch: John Abraham.

Jail-to-House rock

GORAKHPUR: From jail to the Vidhan Sabha is a distance getting shorter by the day in UP,and now Mukhtar Ansari is set to walk down the road again. The ruling BSP just declared Ansari — who is in jail as the main accused in BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai’s murder case and is an Independent MLA from Mau — as its candidate from Varanasi for the Lok Sabha polls,to take on the BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi. The brother of the don,Afzal Ansari,a sitting MP,has already been announced as the BSP’s candidate for Ghazipur. Many are even seeing it as a tacit understanding between the BSP and BJP,with Ansari’s nomination dividing votes on communal lines, benefiting Joshi.

Aiming at the shooter

DEHRADUN: A spurned candidate these days can always unleash a dependable weapon: a spouse. The prospect has left the BJP in cold sweat in Tehri where it has fielded ace shooter Jaspal Rana against sitting Congress MP Vijay Bahuguna. However, the decision hasn’t gone down well with BJP MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, who wanted the Tehri nomination. Now Dehradun is abuzz that Chauhan’s wife Madhu will enter the fray from the seat,as a BSP candidate. Madhu is not to be taken lightly, having dealt the BJP a bitter defeat in the zilla panchayat elections in the state capital as an Independent.

Raju ban gaya politician

KANPUR: Comedian Raju Srivastava is the latest from show business contemplating politics, more specifically a Congress offer to contest the Lok Sabha polls. “The Congress and SP have offered me tickets, but as as the Congress offer came first,I am considering it,” Srivastava, who hails from Kanpur, told PTI-Bhasha. His first preference,he says,is Allahabad and Sonia Gandhi has been informed.

Rahul,Rahul everywhere

VADODARA: When it comes to the Gandhi family,Congressmen rarely stop at anything. But this,Dahod police have said,is carrying things too far. They have filed a complaint against local Congress MLA Vajesinh Panda for “putting up posters welcoming Rahul Gandhi” — who just visited Gujarat — in the office of the Superintendent of Police. The MLA,who was booked on Sunday for causing damage to public property, has accused “mischief mongers” wanting to malign the image of the party as being behind the act.

Raining on Rane parade

MUMBAI: An apology may have paved the way for Narayan Rane’s return to the Congress, but others aren’t as impressed. Old-time Congress loyalists from his home district of Sindhudurg are holding a rally here on Monday to oppose his re-entry. “We will show the party high command that if we are hurt, there will be a problem,” said one of the leaders.
