Robbery seems to have been the main motive behind a gang of thieves killing DSP Balraj Singh Gill and Monica Kapila on February 2. Three months after they were killed, the police on Thursday claimed to have solved the double murder.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said they have arrested three persons in connection with the double murder and are looking for the fourth accused.

Mobile trackers helped the police nab the culprits. Expensive cars driven by Gill and Kapila on the day of their murders were the main targets, said the police.

Those arrested have been identified as Harvinder Singh alias Binder (23),Pritpal Singh alias Laddoo (21) and Umesh (21). They are residents of village Talwara, which is close to Golf Link colony where Gill and Kapila were murdered. The police are looking for Hassan Pal,who, too,is a part of this gang.

Ishwar Singh said,“We arrested them on Thursday and their interrogation is going on. We have preliminary confessions. The clinching evidence that we have on hand, linking them with the double murder,is that we have found mobiles belonging to Gill and Kapila from their possession. Gill’s Samsung phone was recovered from Harvinder while his Apple iPhone was in the possession of Pritpal. Kapila’s Nokia phone was with Umesh. The original SIM cards are missing and batteries have very low charge. The accused have told us that a sambal (iron rod),dasta (sharp-edged weapon),stick and knife were used to kill Gill and Kapila. Harvinder and his brother set up music systems in marriages,Pritpal works in a construction company, and Umesh is a small time photographer. The accused have confessed to having taken away Gill’s and Kapila’s purses, watches, jewellery and other things.”

The police said the three men are petty thieves and have confessed to many incidents of loot in the area. While Singh refused to divulge details,it’s learnt that the Innova car which Kapila was driving and Chervolet Optra that Gill was driving were the main target.

It is learnt that the accused attacked them with an intention to loot the cars but when they were counter-attacked by Gill they realised that he was police officer and hence, killed both of them.
