Posts Rs 20 crore plus over the weekend,Cars 2 goes off-track at the box-office
Double Dhamaal, one of the most awaited sequels of the year, has lived up to its expectations at the box-office. The film has recorded an impressive nett collection of Rs 26 crore over the weekend. But while producer-director Indra Kumar attributed the numbers to the films content, trade analysts and theatrewallahs said that the films convoluted script prevented the numbers from going higher. The script lacks cohesiveness and there are gaping holes in individual sequences. Although one does not really look for logic in a comedy,Double Dhamaal raises questions without answering them logically, trade analyst Komal Nahta said. However,he said that the films one-liners and dialogues, apart from sequences featuring Satish Kaushik and a gorilla were drawing whistles from the crowds.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra took a contrarian view and said that the film has not been liked by many people. The film did a business of Rs 23 crore only because it was a solo release and the effect of Ready has waned after three weeks. Double Dhamaal is just a collection of gags and as expected,it is doing better in cities than in towns.
Commenting on the films future,Nahta said that the film was unlikely to earn profits for distributors, especially those from the Central India-Central Provinces belt. These distributors have bought the film for a much higher price. They are unlikely to earn profits. The film was made on a Rs 40.5 crore budget and apart from the theatrical revenues,it has also sold its satellite rights for Rs 15 crore, he said.
In a statement released by Reliance Entertainment,CEO Sanjeev Lamba said that the film has grossed Rs 25.6 crore nett in India and Rs 5.6 crore in overseas territories. The film has already opened in 37 countries and is scheduled to open in non- traditional markets like France,Russia,China,Turkey,Greece,Switzerland,Ukraine,Azerbaijan,Georgia and Belarus amongst many others, he said.
Kumar diplomatically stated that the films numbers were proof enough that everybody would make money on it. The CI-CP distributors have paid the correct amount for Double Dhamaal. There is no question of anyone losing money on the film. We,too, had made profits even before its release after selling the satellite for Rs 15 crore and other ancillary rights, he said.
Prakhar Joshi,Head – Programming,PVR Cinemas, said that the film opened with Rs 7 crore on Friday in the country and collected Rs 3 crore in PVR theatres across the country. There was an average increase of five to 10 per cent on Saturday and Sunday. The film is doing quite well in the North, especially Punjab and Delhi, which recorded almost cent per cent occupancy. In Mumbai and Gujarat,Double Dhamaal saw occupancies between 60 to 70 per cent, while the South fared even poorer with 50 to 60 per cent occupancy, he said. Comparing it to its earlier version,Joshi said that Dhamaal collected Rs 3.5 crore in all while Double Dhamaal has already collected Rs 3 crore in three days. The buzz has sustained beyond the weekend in the North with almost 80 per cent collections on Monday, he said.
The other release from last week,Disneys Cars 2,has seen an average turnout, which is disappointing according to trade analysts. The film collected Rs 50 lakh at PVR properties across the country. One reason for the low figures, apart from poor reviews, has been the fact that the film did not release in any other language except English.
The industry has already trained its eyes on big ticket releases of this week with three different films Transformers: Dark Of The Moon,Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap and Delhi Belly vying for audience attention.
ON THE CARDS
Hemlata Mandhiyan,a noted Tarot Card reader predicts the fate of big releases of the week
Double Dhamaal will do well at the box-office. The Ace of Cups is guaranteed to bring happiness for everyone involved in the movie. It is a sign of fresh opportunities and new beginning for director Indra Kumar who will come out of his shell with this film. Kangna Ranauts stars are also very good at this point of time, which is what the Queen of Pentacles portends. Most importantly, the timing of the release of Double Dhamaal is perfect.
