Congress president Sonia Gandhi Friday directed all party MPs and MLAs to donate a month’s salary for relief and rehabilitation work in Uttarakhand. She also asked party parliamentarians to give Rs 10 lakh each from their MPLADS fund.

The Congress sent two leaders to Dehradun to monitor the relief work and also indicated it is not unwilling to enter into a political slug fest with the BJP over the relief aid.

On being asked whether the Rs 2 crore assistance announced by Gujarat was enough, party spokesperson Raj Babbar was quick to list out the assistance announced by some other states — not all Congress-ruled ones. “Maharasthra has given Rs 10 crore,UP Rs 25 crore,Haryana Rs 10 crore and Karnataka Rs 5 crore. You can draw your conclusion now,” he said. “We are talking about the Chaar Dham where such a tragedy has happened. Since you have asked about the amount given by Gujarat, you yourself find an answer to it. Who is the one who only takes the name of God? When they are giving money, they have to look at their conscience. For them, religion is their crutches,” he said. He added that “many neighbouring states are doing without talking about it (religion).”
