Differently-abled girls lodged in an NGO-run school in Kanota, barely 20 km from the state capital, have alleged sexual abuse against staff members of the school. Four staff members of the NGO were arrested on Saturday and further investigations are being carried into the incident, the police said.

Five girls with hearing and speech impairment from a juvenile shelter home in Gandhi Nagar had been sent to the residential school in Kanota for a speech training session for two weeks. On their return, the warden of the shelter home noticed injury marks on their bodies and reported the incident to the Child Welfare Committee.

The victims, aged between 15 and 17,were counseled for 15 days during which they communicated to the CWC officials that two of them were repeatedly raped while the others were beaten up during their stay at the residential school.

The committee filed a police complaint following which four employees of the NGO — the warden, supervisor, accounts clerk and the clerk’s wife — were arrested early on Saturday.

The residential school run by Awaaz Foundation receives financial aid from the Social Justice department. It is said to have over 100 students staying on its campus and has been operational for the past six years.

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties held protests in the city demanding strict action against the guilty and de-recognition for the residential school. It also sought drafting of guidelines to deal with such incidents.
