The young lawyer who has alleged sexual harassment by a Supreme Court judge who has since retired has been asked to contact the Delhi Police and record her statement. The police sent her an official email on Tuesday.
We have written to the woman and asked her to contact us so that we can record her statement and proceed with the investigations. We have also contacted Kian Ganz of Legally India,requesting him to give us a contact number so that we can contact her, confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Police New Delhi S B S Tyagi.
The lawyer,in her blog and later in her interview to website Legally India,had alleged that she was sexually harassed by a Supreme Court judge with whom she was interning last December. The woman,who graduated from Kolkatas National University of Juridical Sciences NUJS this year,did not name the judge,but said he had retired recently.
On Monday,she deposed before the three-judge panel set up by the Supreme Court.
Police got her email address from Professor S N Singh,former dean,Faculty of Law,Delhi University,who had filed a complaint with the Tilak Marg police station on November 14,seeking a probe into the case.
Please treat this communication to lodge an FIR under Section 154 CrPc for sexual assault… which is cognizable offence under Sections 354,354 A,354 B and other relevant provisions of the IPC, Singh said in his complaint. It is a serious matter concerning the legal fraternity,especially women,and it is my constitutional obligation to inform the police to register the FIR and investigate the offence, he said.
The Delhi Police had earlier said that it has begun a preliminary probe into the charges and is awaiting the womans statement to register a case and proceed with the investigations.
