Universal Music Denmark
The band which gave the world Eurodance hits like My Oh My,Roses are Red,and Barbie Girl, has come out of a 11-year hiatus to release its third official studio album Megalomania. Aqua reunited in 2007 officially, but it wasn’t until February last year that they began work on the new album. In the meantime, since the release of their last album Aquarius in 2000,the band’s genre has shifted from the Eurodance to electro-pop or dance-pop.
The single How R U Doin? has hit the top of the charts in Denmark. Its one of the few songs in the album that is reminiscent of their music from the 90s with an opening riff that can be compared to Pitbulls Give me everything. Playmate to Jesus is a slow number,a lot like their earlier single Turn Back Time, only a little more faster. The album contains a total of 11 songs, including numbers like Sucker for a Superstar,No Party Patrol,Like a Robot,Viva Las Vegas,Come n’ Get It,Be my Saviour Tonight and Dirty Little Pop Song.
On the whole, the fast moving songs from the past have now been replaced by slower dance numbers that border a little on electronica, and even trance. Lene Nystrøm’s vocals are, however, still a wonderful reminder of the days when their albums ruled dance clubs across Europe. Like a Robot will definitely be a hit with the clubs, with its electro-dance rhythm and repetitive vocals. No Party Patrol is also similar, with subtle reminders again of Pitbull’s music. Sucker for a Superstar is a no-holds-barred dance number it’s racy, with a slower chorus.
On the whole the album is a decent buy for people who are looking for music to groove to. It is not as good as Aquarium, but worth your while if you want some easy listening material on your Ipod.
