Dabhol power plant runs out of gas supply, faces complete shutdown

The gas supply to the country’s largest gas based power plant — Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt Ltd,better known as the Dabhol power plant

The gas supply to the country’s largest gas based power plant — Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt Ltd,better known as the Dabhol power plant — is down to zero and the station is now facing a total shutdown.

“The gas supply beginning Saturday morning has gone to zero and we are now getting into the preservation mode and are already in talks with GE for the maintenance of the turbines,” a senior RGPPL official told The Indian Express on conditions of anonymity.

The 1,967 MW power plant that had been forced into intermittent shutdowns by low gas supply levels, which reached a new low of 0.25 mmscmd (million metric standard cubic metres per day) last week and forced the station to go for shutdown of around 10 days after being operational for around three days.

The gas supply stood at 1.3 mmscmd in January, allowing the plant to produce between 270 and 300MW,then dropped to 1.1 mmscmd and finally to 0.4 mmscmd this month.

While Reliance Industries is the major gas supplier to the plant, the official said that the supply had been coming down significantly any reason being assigned and has now gone to zero.

The official also told that their priority now is to maintain the six turbines they have which need to be fired after a few days in order to keep them in running condition and with no gas supply now,we are in talks with GE to maintain the engines.

“The low gas supply requires us to shut down for around 10 days and then run for two or three days by managing underdrawal and overdrawal,” said an RGPPL executive.
