A financial analyst who is a resident of New York has filed a police complaint against an Independent Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council in North Bangalore for allegedly slapping her with his footwear following a confrontation over alleged land encroachments by the MLC.

The Kothanur police have registered a case of assault against Independent MLC Byarathi Suresh who is considered a close associate of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Police said S Vijayalakshmi,a cousin of MLC Byarathi Suresh, filed a complaint against him alleging encroachment of her land located at the Bhairati village on the Bagaluru-Hennur Road in east Bangalore. She reported being assaulted by the MLC when she went to his house on Tuesday morning to discuss the issue.

Vijayalakshmi has alleged that the MLC told her to hand over all her property to him since she had settled in the US. When the offer was rejected a verbal clash followed and the MLC grabbed her footwear and slapped her with them, she has said in her complaint. The MLC also allegedly threatened to use his political power against her if she failed to sell her property to him.

Police have registered a case against the MLC on the basis of the complaint.

The wealthy Byarathi Suresh caused a shock in 2012 when despite being an Independent candidate he defeated the official Congress candidate in an election by the members of the Legislative Assembly to pick members for the Legislative Council. It was widely suspected at that time that cross voting by some rebels in the Congress helped him defeat official candidate Iqbal Ahmed Saradagi.

When contacted by The Indian Express,Suresh claimed that Vijayalakshmi whose father is a retired police officer was his own cousin sister and that they were earlier living as a joint family. A portion of land was given to her also from the ancestral property but she had been demanding some more property from a share for seven brothers, the MLC said. The matter is currently in court and is pending resolution,he said. “She came to my house on Tuesday and demanded transfer of ownership of some property. She threatened to spoil my public image by going to media and filing a case,” Suresh claimed.

“She has filed a complaint against me. I am not her enemy because she is my elder sister. We will obey the orders of the court in our land dispute,” he said.
