The Congress on Tuesday demanded resignation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi following the sting operation that claimed to have exposed a plan by two BJP MPs to protect former Home minister and his man Friday Amit Shah in the Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case.

Congress MP and chairman of the party’s communication department Ajay Maken said the “facts” shown in the sting CD were “very serious and important”. “This is an attempt to influence the judicial process. The matter should be investigated by the CBI and till the probe is over,Modi should not remain in office. How can he continue as chief minister when such allegations have surfaced?” he said. The sting video was also shown to the assembled mediapersons at the Congress party headquarters here.

The party fielded P L Punia, the chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes,to take on the BJP leader, who heads the BJP’s campaign cell for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. “We will take action into the matter and send a copy of the CD to the CBI. I would ask the agency to bring it to the notice of the Supreme Court,” said Punia. He said representatives of Prajapati community handed him a copy of the CD and complained that some BJP leaders were attempting to influence the investigation and judicial process in the case.

BJP MP Prakash Javadekar dismissed the content of the sting CD as “ridiculous and distorted”. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad called it a Congress-sponsored conspiracy.
