Babulal Nagar, accused of sexually assaulting a married woman, was on Monday suspended from the Congress by the state unit of the party. Earlier this month,Nagar had stepped down as Dairy,Khadi and Rural Industries Minister, giving in to pressure.

Following a meeting on Monday, the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee decided on Nagar’s suspension owing to his alleged involvement in the sexual assault. The party has been trying to distance itself from controversies ahead of Assembly polls in November. The poll dates are likely to be announced soon and sources said the party does not want to court any controversy at this crucial juncture.

Nagar has been suspended from the primary membership of the Congress. He told reporters he would accept all the party’s decisions. “If the party has decided something,it must be in its interest and I hold nothing against the party. There is a political conspiracy to implicate me in a false case and I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence,” Nagar said.

On Sunday, the alleged victim claimed Nagar sent his man to offer her money and insisted she withdraw the case. A video clipping of the conversation between the two was released to the media later in the day. The woman demanded a fresh medical test on Nagar and said she was dissatisfied with the investigation.

Earlier this month, two Congress leaders, former minister Nagar and Udai Lal Anjana, legislator from Chittorgarh, were accused of sexual assault, drawing criticism from the Opposition which made it a rallying point in the poll-bound state. State BJP chief Vasundhara Raje and the BJP Mahila Morcha condemned the Gehlot government for going soft on the alleged offenders and sought a CBI inquiry. Activists and Opposition leaders questioned why no arrests have been made so far
